ReneWave perspective · Electrical protection

    ABB

ABB has a long electrical-engineering lineage and several very different low-voltage protection families. Our Budget positioning is a commercial choice for this catalog, not a statement that ABB is a technically inferior manufacturer.

    01 / Who they are

ABB began in 1988; its roots are older.

ABB formed in 1988 from the merger of ASEA and Brown Boveri, building on established electrical-engineering businesses. Its solar-inverter portfolio expanded substantially through Power-One in 2013, but that inverter business was transferred to FIMER in 2020. Current ABB equipment in our catalog belongs to electrification and protection: modular breakers, residual-current devices and molded-case breakers. The historical inverter activity should not be confused with those current products or used to imply that ABB still supplies the former solar-inverter range.

The manufacturer’s corporate origins are not the manufacturing country of every supplied device. Read the exact label and documents.

    Business development and revenue

ABB’s 2025 results show growth across electrification, motion and automation. To make the comparison meaningful, both years below exclude the Robotics business: 2024 is the restated figure published with the 2025 results. The revenue is for continuing group operations, not for breakers alone and not for the solar-inverter business sold in 2020.

    Business milestones

    1. ASEA and Brown Boveri form ABB

The merger combines power and automation expertise. Modern modular and industrial protection families develop within this wider engineering business.

    2. Power-One expands solar conversion

The acquisition adds a broad existing inverter portfolio and manufacturing network to ABB’s solar activity. It is an expansion of an already active business.

    3. The inverter business transfers to FIMER

ABB completes the divestment in March. Its low- and medium-voltage equipment remains relevant to solar installations through protection and electrical integration.

    02 / Technology

    Selected technology advances

Selected developments in the brand’s specialty, not a complete history or catalog.

Understand the differences between the relevant families. Broader manufacturer offerings and the products ReneWave lists are kept separate below.

    S200 / SH200 / S800

    Thermal-magnetic circuit protection

These modular families have model-specific curves and capacities. The S800 high-performance range is not interchangeable with every S200 model. The referenced S204-C20 is a four-pole 20 A C-curve breaker, while the pictured S202L-C63 is a different two-pole 63 A example. A family photograph does not transfer pole count or breaking capacity to another reference.

Voltage and standard determine how a breaking-capacity figure is read.

M200 magnetic-only models do not add overload protection.

    FH202 / RCCB

    Residual-current detection

An RCCB responds to a documented leakage threshold, not to every overload or short circuit. Our FH202 is a separate product function. An FH202 residual-current switch has separate rated-current and leakage-threshold values. For the listed 40 A example, 40 A is a carrying rating, not an overload trip setting; upstream or coordinated overcurrent protection is still required.

Sensitivity and device current rating are separate figures.

    It needs separate overcurrent protection.

    Molded-case families

Frame size, trip-unit current and protection functions are distinct. XT2 Ekip I and LS/I do not provide identical protection. The XT2 example has a 100 A Ekip LS/I electronic trip unit: long-time overload, short-time and instantaneous functions are separately defined. A 160 A frame-size label does not change that trip-unit rating.

The complete ordering code identifies the fitted trip function.

    A 160 A frame does not turn a 100 A trip unit into 160 A protection.

Short definitions for the names used in this guide.

Different standards and test duties define these capacity ratings; they must retain voltage and standard qualifiers.

A current rating alone does not establish function, fault protection or circuit suitability.

03 / What stands behind the brand

    Budget

What our Budget label does and does not say.

Commercial positioning with the technical identities preserved.

Our positioning applies to the selected range. The documented differences above explain the choice.

    An established electrical lineage

The 1988 merger and earlier engineering history explain the company’s origin, not the lifespan of a newly supplied breaker.

    Protection boundaries in writing

Exact ABB records distinguish trip functions, frame sizes and voltage-qualified ratings. Our catalog keeps those distinctions instead of a universal quality score.

    Trip functions determine protection

Modular breakers, RCCBs and electronic molded-case breakers protect against different conditions. ABB’s reference-specific trip data gives a concrete basis for coordination, while enclosure size and ampere labels alone do not.

Published characteristics are useful evidence, not a promise of trouble-free operation or fast local warranty handling. Newer models do not inherit decades of field history from the company’s age.

    05 / Warranty & buyer questions

    Warranty coverage

The exact reference, market and supplied terms govern coverage. A datasheet or compliance certificate is not itself a warranty.

Coverage depends on the supplied terms

A universal manufacturer warranty duration for the listed references was not verified. Product defects are assessed under the applicable supplied warranty; protection coordination, installation faults and misuse are separate matters.

    Product cover and system performance

Manufacturer product cover concerns qualifying defects in the supplied equipment. It does not establish the complete installation’s performance, an energy-yield guarantee or a fixed local claim-response time.

    Questions before you buy

This is ReneWave’s commercial positioning for its current selection, not a global ranking of ABB’s engineering.

No. Magnetic-only interruption does not provide the thermal overload function.

No. Residual-current protection must be explicitly documented for the device.
